Levothyroxine Sodium – 100 micrograms (mcg) per tablet
Primary indication: Treatment of hypothyroidism, to replace deficient thyroid hormones—typically caused by primary thyroid gland failure, surgery, or radiation.
Also used in the management of goitre (e.g. chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis), and as part of post-thyroid cancer treatment or suppression therapy.
Administration: Take once daily on an empty stomach, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast for optimal absorption.
Avoid interactions: Do not take within 4 hours of calcium, iron, antacids, or cholesterol-lowering agents like cholestyramine, as these may impair absorption.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, unless it's close to the next dose—do not double the dose. Continue therapy even if symptoms improve; dosage adjustments should be made by a healthcare provider.
