Medicinal charcoal
Indication
Acute diarrhoea, prevention of absorption in oral intoxications and acceleration of elimination in intoxication with substances subject to enterohepatic circulation. For examples, carbamazepine, phenobarb, phenylbutazone, theophylline.
Instruction
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take with plenty of liquid. Allow to disintegrate in water with stirring or take whole with liquid. Take at least two hours before or two hours after other medications. Avoid milk, ice cream & cocoa. In intoxication cases, it may be made into a paste and administered in small quantities; for unconscious patients, it may be administered under medical supervision as a suspension in water via gastric tube; it should be given in isotonic saline/full electrolyte solution if multiple doses are administered.
Drug interaction
Medicinal charcoal may interfere with drug absorption in the gastrointestinal tract when taken simultaneously.
