Erythromycin ethylsuccinate
Indication
GUT infection, pneumonia, diphteria, erythrasma, gonorrhoea, Legionnaires' disease, listeria infection, pertussis, pharyngitis, upper & lower resp tract infection, skin & soft tissue infection & syphilis. Prophylaxis in rheumatic fever.
Instruction
Adult Antibacterial 400 mg every 6 hr. Max: 4 g daily. Disseminated gonorrhoea 800 mg every 6 hr for 7 days. Legionnaires' disease 800-1,600 mg every 6 hr. Continuous prophylaxis of Strep infections in patient w/ history of rheumatic heart disease &/or chorea 400 mg every 12 hr. Syphilis 800 mg every 6 hr for 15 days in early syphilis or 30 days in late syphilis. Paed Antibacterial 7.5-12.5 mg/kg every 6 hr or 15-25 mg/kg every 12 hr.
Drug interaction
Increased serum theophylline levels. Elevated digoxin serum levels. Increased anticoagulant effects w/ oral anticoagulants. Acute ergot toxicity w/ ergotamine or dihydroergotamine. Decreased clearance of triazolam & midazolam. Rhabdomyolysis w/ lovastatin. Elevated serum w/ CYP450-metabolized drugs eg, carbamazepine, alfentanil, disopyramide, lovastatin, bromocriptine, cyclosporine, hexobarbital & phenytoin. Antagonized effects of chloramphenicol & lincomycins. Interfered bactericidal effect of penicillins. Concomitant use w/ hepatotoxic or ototoxic drugs.
