Furosemide
Indication
Edema associated w/ CHF, hepatic cirrhosis & renal disease including nephrotic syndrome. Tab: Mild to moderate HTN. Inj: Adjunct in acute pulmonary edema & hypertensive crisis.
Instruction
Should be taken on an empty stomach: If GI distress occurs, take w/ food or milk.
Drug interaction
Enhanced nephrotoxicity of cephalosporin antibiotics eg, cephalothin. Enhanced ototoxicity of aminoglycoside antibiotics. Enhanced hypotensive action of antihypertensive drugs. Marked BP reduction w/ ACE inhibitors. Risk of hearing defects w/ cisplatin. Potassium-lowering effect w/ steroids. Provoked lithium toxicity. Reduced absorption w/ phenytoin. Antagonized natriuresis & increased plasma renin activity w/ NSAIDS. Increased serum conc by probenecid.
