Erythromycin stearate
Indication
Upper & lower resp tract, ear & oral, eye, veneral, skin & soft tissue, GI infections. Osteomyelitis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, pertussis. Prophylaxis of pre- & post-op, trauma, burns, rheumatic fever, bacterial endocarditis.
Instruction
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken on an empty stomach 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Drug interaction
Increased serum theophylline & digoxin conc. Decreased plasma clearance & prolonged duration of action of alfentanil. Inhibited carbamazepine & valproic acid metabolism. Antagonized effects of chloramphenicol or lincomycin. Increased cyclosporine plasma conc. Increased vasospasm associated w/ ergotamine. Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis w/ lovastatin. Decreased clearance of midazolam or triazolam. Increased potential for ototoxicity w/ other ototoxic medications. Increased risk of hemorrhage w/ warfarin.
