Indication
Hypokalaemia w/ or w/o metabolic alkalosis in digitalis intoxication & in patients w/ hypokalaemia familial periodic paralysis. Prophylaxis in patients w/ inadequate K dietary intake & in patients w/ digitalis & diuretic treatment.
Instruction
Should be taken with food: Take w/ or immediately after meals. Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water, do not chew/crush tab.
Drug interaction
Decreased effect w/ adrenocorticoids, glucocorticoids or corticotrophin (ACTH). Increased severity of GI lesions w/ antimuscarinics eg, atropine. Promote serum K accumulation w/ K-sparing diuretics eg, amiloride, spironolactone or triamterene, low-salt milk or K-containing medication or salt substitute. Precipitated cardiac arrhythmias w/ Ca salts. Hyperkalaemia w/ captopril. Monitor serum K conc w/ digitalis glycosides. Reduced conc w/ Na cycle exchange resins eg, Na polystyrene sulfonate, glucose-insulin or Na bicarbonate infusion, chronic laxative use. Enhanced quinidine's antiarrhythmic effect. Reduced vit B12 absorption.
