Cefuroxime Na
Indication
Resp tract, ENT, UTI, soft tissue, bone & joint infections, obstet & gynaecological infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, gonorrhoea, septicaemia, meningitis, peritonitis. Surgical prophylaxis against infections.
Instruction
Adult 750 mg IM or IV inj tds. Severe infection 1.5 g IV tds may be increased to 6 hrly frequency. Total daily dose: 3-6 g. Childn & infant 30-100 mg/kg daily in 3 or 4 divided doses. Neonate 30-100 mg/kg daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. Gonorrhoea Adult 1.5 g as single dose given as two 750 mg IM w/ different sites. Meningitis Adult 3 g IV every 8 hr. Childn & infant 150-250 mg/kg daily IV in 3 or 4 divided doses. Neonate 100 mg/kg daily IV. Surgical prophylaxis Abdominal, pelvic & orthopaedic operations: 1.5 g IV w/ anesth induction, may be supplemented w/ two 750 mg IM 8 & 16 hr later. Cardiac, pulmonary, oesophageal & vascular operations: 1.5 g IV w/ anesth induction continuing w/ 750 mg IM tds for 24-48 hr. Total joint replacement: 1.5 g mixed dry w/ methyl methacrylate cement polymer before adding liqd monomer. Adult Pneumonia 1.5 g bd IV or IM for 48-72 hr, followed by oral cefuroxime axetil 500 mg bd for 7-10 days. Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis 750 mg bd IV or IM for 48-72 hr, followed by oral cefuroxime axetil 500 mg bd for 5-10 days. CrCl 10-20 mL/min 750 mg bd, CrCl <10 mL/min 750 mg once daily. Patient on haemodialysis Further 750 mg IV or IM at the end of each dialysis. Renal failure patient on continuous arteriovenous haemodialysis or high-flux haemofiltration 750 mg bd.
Drug interaction
Lowered oestrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs.
