Salbutamol sulfate
Indication
Respirator soln/Nebules Acute severe asthma (status asthmaticus) & routine management of chronic bronchospasm unresponsive to conventional therapy. Nebules Management & prevention of asthma attack.
Instruction
Respirator soln Adult Dilute 2.5-5 mg (max 10 mg) up to 2-2.5 mL final vol, then nebulise. For intermittent administration in adult, undiluted 10 mg to be nebulised over 3-5 min. Childn <12 yr Dilute 2.5 mg (max 5 mg) up to 2-2.5 mL final vol. Continuous administration: Dilute to salbutamol 50-100 mcg/mL then administer at a rate of 1-2 mg/hr (1-2 mL soln made up to 100 mL w/ diluent). Nebules 2.5-5 mg up to qds. Max: 40 mg/day in adult can be given under strict supervision.
Drug interaction
Acute severe asthma potentiated by xanthine derivatives, steroids, diuretics & hypoxia. Corticosteroids can potentiate ketoacidosis. Should not be prescribed w/ β-blocking drugs eg, propranolol. Caution when using w/ other inhaled sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine, MAOIs or TCAs & digoxin. Respirator soln & nebules: Acute angle closure glaucoma w/ ipratropium Br.
