Doxycycline HCl
Indication
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever & group, Q fever, rickettsialpox & tick fevers. Resp infections, psittacosis, lymphogranuloma venereum, uncomplicated urethral, endocervical or rectal infections in adult, trachoma, inclusion conjunctivitis, granuloma inguinale (donovanosis), Lyme disease (stage 1), louse- or tick-borne relapsing fever, nongonococcal urethritis. Infections caused by susceptible gm -ve & +ve microorganisms. Adjunct treatment in acute intestinal amoebiasis & severe acne. Prophylaxis & treatment of malaria, leptospirosis & cholera. Prophylaxis in scrub typhus & traveler's diarrhea.
Instruction
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ a full glass of water & remain upright for at least 30 min. If gastric irritation occurs, take w/ food or milk.
Drug interaction
Prolonged prothrombin time w/ warfarin & other anticoagulants. Interfered bactericidal action of penicillin. Impaired absorption by Al, Ca & Mg-containing antacids, Fe-containing prep & bismuth salts. Decreased t½ w/ alcohol, barbiturates, carbamazepine & phenytoin. Fatal renal toxicity w/ methoxyflurane. Less effective OCs. Falsely elevated urinary catecholamine levels w/ fluorescence test.
