The creation of ceramic tiles with a lappato finish requires the use of specialised instruments called lappato abrasive tools. By uniformly abrading the surface, these tools are intended to give the tiles' surface a smooth, matte finish. These tools can employ a variety of abrasive materials, but some of the more popular ones are diamond, silicon carbide, and alumina abrasives. These devices are often utilised in the last phases of tile manufacture, following the firing and glazing of the tiles.
