HI97704 is an advanced portable photometer for the measurement of hydrazine in water. This meter offers a superior optical system that utilizes a reference detector and narrow band interference filters for extremely fast and repeatable measurements.
Hydrazine is a liquid chemical substance normally used in high pressure heating plants because of its properties as an oxygen inhibitor, helping to avoid scaling and corrosion in the plant itself. Hydrazine reacts with dissolved oxygen to yield nitrogen and water; this is an advantage over the sulfite treatment because it does not produce any dissolved solids in the boiled water. Hydrazine is also used as an energy source in fuel elements, as a reducing agent for metal recovery, and as an intermediate in the production of insecticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and many other chemical products.
The HI97704 uses an Adaptation of the Standard Methods for the ASTM Manual of Water and Environmental Technology, Method D1385, p-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde method to measure hydrazine concentrations up to 400 μg/L (ppb). When the reagent is added to samples containing hydrazine, the sample turns a yellow hue; the greater the concentration, the deeper the color. The associated color change is then colorimetrically analyzed according to the Beer-Lambert Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color, and the emitted radiation is dependent upon concentration. For hydrazine determination, a narrow band interference filter at 466 nm allows only blue light to be emitted and passed through the sample cuvette.
