HPV Vaccine & Pap Smear: Key Steps in Preventing Cervical Cancer

What Is a Pap Smear?
A Pap Smear is a simple and quick screening test that checks for cervical cancer or precancerous cells on the cervix. Early detection through a Pap smear can help catch issues before they become serious, making it one of the most important steps in cervical cancer prevention.

How Is a Pap Smear Done?
Though it may feel a bit uncomfortable, the procedure itself is quick and easy:
1. You will lie on your back on an examination table, with your feet resting in stirrups to help position your body.
2. The doctor will gently insert a speculum into the vagina to open it slightly, giving access to the cervix.
3. A small sample of cells will be taken from the cervix and sent to a lab for testing.

The test is over quickly, and you can return to your regular activities immediately.

Why Is a Pap Smear Important?
A Pap smear helps detect abnormal cells early, so that treatment can begin before cancer develops or spreads. It also allows your doctor to test for HPV (Human Papillomavirus), a virus linked to cervical cancer.

HPV Vaccine: Preventing Cervical Cancer Before It Starts
The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect against the types of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer. It’s best to get the vaccine before exposure to the virus, which is why it’s recommended for young girls and boys (typically between ages 926).

Types of HPV Vaccines
Gardasil: Protects against the most common types of HPV, including those that cause cervical cancer, anal cancer, and genital warts.
Cervarix: Another vaccine option, which also protects against HPV strains linked to cervical cancer.
Gardasil 9: An updated version of Gardasil that covers 9 types of HPV, providing broader protection.

How the HPV Vaccine and Pap Smear Work Together
The HPV vaccine helps prevent the types of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer, while a Pap smear helps detect early signs of cancer and precancerous changes. Together, they provide powerful protection and early detection, allowing for timely treatment and reducing the risk of developing cervical cancer.

At Sheen Clinic, we offer both the HPV vaccine and Pap smear services to help you protect your health and catch potential issues early. Schedule a consultation today to learn more!
