The story of Monkey 47 follows an Indian-born British commander stationed in Germany after World War II. Inspired by the Black Forest from a family heritage perspective, he combined British influences, Indian botanicals and natural botanicals from the German forests to create a complex gin which he named ''Schwarzwald Dry Gin'' and Features ''Max the Monkey''.
The commander also helped rebuild the world-famous Berlin Zoo, and in the process he came to support Max, the egret monkey who lived there. So it seemed only natural that years after his retirement he would still have an affection for the monkeys he patronized, and when he brewed his gin he named it after him.
In terms of botanicals alone, it boasts 47 proof gin and is probably the most complex gin on the market, but to throw you a curveball, it's also made with a molasses-based spirit.
