These ball bearings have a spherical surface with a point at which the center of the outer ring track surface matches the center of the bearing, and the inner ring has a two-row track groove.
The balls, cage, and inner ring are able to tilt freely to a degree with respect to the outer ring, and rotate. As such, misalignment caused by processing errors in the axis or housing, or by mounting of the bearing, is automatically corrected.
However, as the capacity to bear axial loads is not so great, the bearings are not suited to locations with large axial loads.
The bearings are often used in applications such as drive shafts, as mounting and un-mounting are easy if an adapter is used for bearings with tapered bore calibers.
- Accommodate static and dynamic misalignment
The bearings are self-aligning like spherical roller bearings or CARB bearings.
- Excellent high-speed performance
Self-aligning ball bearings generate less friction than any other type of rolling bearing, which enables them to run cooler even at high speeds.
- Minimum maintenance
Because of low heat generation, the bearing temperature is lower, leading to extended bearing life and maintenance intervals.
- Low friction
Very loose conformity between balls and outer ring keeps friction and frictional heat at low levels.
- Excellent light load performance
Self-aligning ball bearings have low minimum load requirements.
- Low noise
Self-aligning ball bearings can reduce noise and vibration levels, for example, in fans.
- Correct for misalignment
The inner ring, balls, and cage rotate freely around the bearing center, allowing permissible dynamic misalignment of about 0.07 to 0.12 radian (4 to 7 degrees) under normal loads.
- Ideal for difficult mountings
Self-aligning ball bearings suit applications where shaft bending occurs and where it is difficult to align the shaft and housing (transmission shafts, etc.)
