Plaquenil Tablets contain hydroxychloroquine sulfate. Each tablet typically contains 200 mg of hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg of base. The inactive ingredients include anhydrous lactose, croscarmellose sodium, glyceryl triacetate, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, and titanium dioxide2.
Indications:
Plaquenil is indicated for the treatment of:

• Malaria: Prophylaxis and treatment of malaria in areas where chloroquine resistance is not reported.
• Rheumatoid Arthritis: Treatment of acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis.
• Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Treatment of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus.

• Dosage: The dosage varies based on the condition being treated. For malaria prophylaxis, the recommended dose is 400 mg (310 mg base) weekly. For rheumatoid arthritis, the usual starting dose is 400-600 mg daily, which may be reduced to 200-400 mg daily once a good response is achieved. For lupus, the usual starting dose is 400 mg once or twice daily, which may be reduced to 200-400 mg daily for long-term use.
• Administration: Take the tablets with a meal or a glass of milk. Hydroxychloroquine is cumulative in action and may require several weeks to exert its beneficial effects1.
• Precautions: Regular ophthalmological examinations are recommended due to the risk of retinal toxicity. The medication should be discontinued if there are any signs of retinal damage.
