Tegretol (carbamazepine) is indicated for:
Epilepsy: Partial seizures (complex/psychomotor), generalized tonic clonic, and mixed seizures
Neuralgias: Trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia pain control
Mood disorders: Acute mania in bipolar disorder (as mood stabilizer)
Neuropathic & withdrawal: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome symptom relief
Dosage:
Adults: Start with 100–200 /mg once or twice daily, then gradually increase based on clinical response and tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with water, with or without food.
Swallow tablets whole—do not crush or chew
Consistency:
Taken at the same times daily to maintain stable blood levels.
Monitoring & Precautions:
Regular check-ups: monitor blood counts, liver/renal function, and drug interactions
Watch for side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, unsteady gait, nausea, skin rash (risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome—especially in Asians; HLA-B*1502 testing recommended)
Avoid abrupt cessation to prevent withdrawal seizures
Missed Dose:
If missed, take as soon as remembered unless near the next scheduled dose—do not double up
