Metronidazole
Indication
Amoebic liver abscess, anaerobic bacterial infections. Tab Symptomatic & asymptomatic trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, intra-abdominal, skin & skin structure, gynaecological, bone & joint, CNS & lower resp tract infections; bacterial septicemia, endocarditis. Oral susp Amoebiasis, giardiasis.
Instruction
Tab Trichomoniasis 2 g as single dose or 800 mg in the morning & 1.2 g in the evening as 2-day course, or 600 mg-1 g daily in 2 or 3 divided doses as 7-day course. Amoebiasis 400-800 mg tds for 5-10 days. Anaerobic bacterial infections Adult 7.5 mg/kg every 6 hr for 7-10 days. Max: Not to exceed 4 g in 24 hr.
Drug interaction
Potentiated effect of warfarin & other oral coumarin anticoagulants. Reduced plasma levels w/ drugs inducing microsomal enzymes eg, phenytoin or phenobarb. Impaired clearance of phenytoin. Prolonged t½ & decreased plasma clearance w/ cimetidine. Lithium toxicity. Psychotic reactions w/ disulfiram & alcohol.
