Purpose:
Reinforce recognition of “Phonograms". These are non-phonetic letters or combination of letters representing specific spoken sound e.g. "maid", "cake” and "say" contain 3 different ways of spelling one group of "A" (ei) sounds and "ai", "ae" and "ay" are all phonograms of that group.
