In building construction, a beam is a horizontal member spanning an opening and carrying a load that may be a brick or stone wall above the opening, in which case the beam is often called a lintel (see post-and-lintel system)
In some cases, especially in larger or load-bearing walls, structural support beams may be integrated horizontally within the wall to provide additional support for the structure. These beams can help distribute the weight of the structure and reinforce the wall against lateral forces.
