Tasted from a magnum purchased on release, the 1990 Domaine de Chevalier is a magnificent Pessac-Léognan, one that I was gobsmacked to find that I have never tasted before! It has one of those entrancing, tertiary, smoke and mushroom scented bouquets, secondary aromas that are beautifully defined and exude the essence of Pessac-Léognan. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, still plenty of black dusky fruit infused with pencil lead, tobacco and dried herbs such as rosemary and sage. The balance is delectable and it fans out beautifully on the finish. This is one of those wines that attest the greatness of Domaine de Chevalier, notwithstanding its longevity in great vintages.
