Passion fruit is a vine tropical fruit tree native to South America and is a fruit of the Passion flower family. It was introducted in Japan in the middle of the Meji era. Passion fruit has a sweet yet sour taste and a refreshing aroma, typical of southern Japan. The main production areas in the prefecture include the sourthern part of the main island, Onna village and Ishigaki island.
