Structural Inspection through Ultrasonic Scanning (Storage Tanks, Pipelines, Ship Bodies)

Structural Inspection through Ultrasonic Scanning
General Intelligence Sdn Bhd is using ultrasonic scanning inspection robot for automated structural inspection including storage tank, pipes and ship body inspection in identifying corrosion and leaking spots in all types of storage tanks including concrete tanks, steel tanks, FRP, GRP tanks, and all types of pipes including FRP pipes, steel pipes stc.

The robot developed by Coogy is called Panamix Butter 3 and Butter 5, using ultrasonic phased array that conduct a complete health scan over every square inch of your tank in fact in some cases they conduct that health scan over every square millimeter of the tank, and it is submersible that can inspect tank floor, satisfying API653 requirements.
The scanner will send information to the software named OliveX like below in order to identify the weak points

For ship scanning, it looks like below

Navy and ship owners need to keep ships tip top conditions , therefore the preventive maintenance will have to be prioritised. The Coogy- Panabot (Butter 3 and Butter 5) would scan the fleet and generats a map allows us to identify which sites are at risk (e.g. corossions, thin layers, leakages) and require repairs and maintenance. Coogy-Panabot captures 8 million readings across the flight deck alone, conversely only 3000 readings were taken using traditional methods with this never before captured data Coogy-Panabot robotics predictive software forecast rapidly produces actionable repair recommendations eliminating days of planning efforts gecko robotics analytics software enables the Navy / shop owners to visualize the disparity. Coogy-Panabot provides a comprehensive understanding of the asset structural condition which eliminates costly growth work by identifying all damage and need of remediation resulting in decreased unscheduled maintenance.Coogy-Panabot robotics software tools is transforming sustainment for the Navy and ship owners by delivering decision advantage resulting in next generation material readiness get those AI powered data platform unlocks operational readiness reliability and availability any port any shipyard anytime.
Once the robot has detected the hot spots where the problem areas on your tank, pipe or ship body we can stick some continuous corrosion monitoring sensors directly on those hot spots to keep an eye on things and those centers will trigger maintenance at exactly the right time. The scanner could scan to 100% of the areas.

These robots can cover up to about 500m2 or more in 12 hour work shift that gives us the ability to do about 30m diameter tank and 1 1/2 to two ships bringing that typical 30 to 45 day complete screen with the older type of technologies into just a few days. The high accuracy of identification of weak spots / leakage spots of the storage tank body, pipelines, and ship body would largely ensure the correct areas to be focused, and less costly mistakes made for repairs & maintenance on the storage tank body, pipelines, and ship body.

Pipe inspection by the ultrasonic scanner as below

The robotic ultrasonic (UT) solution designed for inspecting water pipes, gas pipelines, composite structures, and various metal components, its advanced technology ensures precise and reliable inspections for a wide range of applications.

It is common that storage tank body, pipelines and ship bodies contain welding joints. These joints are the weak points that may have fine crack lines. For crack we will be using very highly focused probes and this will work for nominal thicknesses of 1/4 inch through 8 inch carbon steel material and then 4 inch diameter and above up to flat something similar to a storage tank or ship body. The ultrasonic scanning robot is at least 20 times more efficient that human manual scanning.

Conventional methods used human for manual scanning, that is firstly slow (in other words, not productive), as a result it could only scan about 1% of the total area. Secondly it will have extra costs on safety e.g. scaffoldings or mobile elevated working platform.

Small coverage by manual scanning

With the limitation of conventional method i.e. human manual scanning, the accumulated costs would be high. The Coogy – Panabot scanning robots (Butter-3 and Butter-5) would save the cost by providing ultrasonic robotic scanning, with wide coverage of ship body and tank body.
