Gekkou is one of the top varieties among the many plum varieties, and is also called the "phantom plum" because of the short haversting period and extremely small production volume. This variety was developed by Toshio Oishi of Fufushima from a naturally pollinated seeding of Formosa.
As its name suggests, it has a beautiful golden colour like moonlight shining through, and is an exquisite delicacy that combines a rich sweetness that surpasses that of plums, a freshness that makes the juice overflow in your mouth. The skin is yellow when hervested, but as it ripens it turns red-orange and thin lines apper.
When it starts to give off a sensual aroma, it is a sign that it is fully ripe (ready to eat). Store it in a cool, dark place until it's fully ripe, and once it is fully ripe, chill it in the refrigerator before eating.
