Azithromycin dihydrate
Indication
Lower & upper rest tract, skin & soft tissue infections, acute otitis media. STD, uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis & non-multiresistant Neisseria gonorrhoea, chancroid due to Haemophilus ducreyi; concurrent infection w/ Treponema pallidum should be excluded. Alone or in combination w/ rifabutin for prophylaxis against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) infection & in combination w/ ethambutol for disseminated MAC (DMAC) infection in patients w/ advanced HIV infection.
Instruction
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Drug interaction
Reduced peak serum conc w/ antacids. Raised digoxin levels. Increased conc of phosphorylated zidovudine. Ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. Monitor cyclosporin levels accordingly.
