Nitroimidazoles are a family of veterinary drugs with antibiotic and anticoccidial activities. They have been used for various applications in the prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of diseases such as coccidiosis and histomoniasis in poultry and Nosema apis in hives, which is the cause of one of the most severe diseases of honeybees. Nitroimidazoles are metabolized mainly by the liver and excreted in the urine. Due to the potential carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, the use of these drugs has been banned within the European Union (EU) under Directives 2377/90 and 2205/2001.
