Stretch marks (striae) are scar-like, discoloured, slightly sunken lines on the skin. It appears when the skin rapidly stretches or shrinks. When the skin rapidly stretches or shrinks, it causes the elastin and collagen in the skin to break. Elastin gives the skin elasticity which provides firm skin with the ability to bounce back when stretched. Collagen is produced by fibroblasts and comprised of tightly-constructed fibers, which help skin maintain its structure and firmness. Strech marks appear in areas where elastin breaks.
Stretch marks first appear as reddish or purple lines. It eventually fades and leave a shiny whitish discolouration. It is easiest to treat during the early stages. Older, deep stretch marks are more challenging to treat.
Treatment options available include laser skin resurfacing, microneedling and retinol topical medication.
