HI97712 is an advanced portable photometer for the measurement of aluminum in water. This meter offers a superior optical system that utilizes a reference detector and narrow band interference filters for extremely fast and repeatable measurements.
Due to its vast occurrence in minerals, rocks, and clays, aluminum is present in nearly all natural water as a soluble salt, colloid, or an insoluble compound. These forms of aluminum may also appear in treated water and wastewater due to its use during coagulation processes. When concentrations are greater than 0.2 mg/L, water will be colored, but does not cause any significant human health effects.
The HI97712 uses an adaptation of the Aluminon Method per Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd edition, to measure aluminum concentrations up to 1.00 mg/L (ppm). When the aluminon buffer reagent is added to samples containing aluminum, the sample will turn a reddish hue; the greater the concentration, the deeper the color. The associated color change is then colorimetrically analyzed according to the Beer-Lambert Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color, and the emitted radiation is dependent upon concentration. For aluminum determination, a narrow band interference filter at 525 nm allows only green light to be emitted and passed through the sample cuvette. As the change in color of the reacted sample increases, absorbance of the specific wavelength of light also increases, while transmittance decreases.
This innovative optical system offers superior performance in accuracy, repeatability, and required time to perform a measurement. This compact, waterproof meter has a tutorial mode that walks the user graphically, step by step, to perform a measurement. The compact design fits comfortable in the hand for use in the field or on a table for benchtop use.
