Metronidazole
Indication
Urogenital trichomoniasis in both genders; non-specific vaginitis. Intestinal & extraintestinal amoebiasis; giardiasis. Acute ulcerative gingivitis & dental infection. Anaerobically infected leg ulcers & pressure sores. Treatment & prophylaxis of anaerobic infection.
Instruction
Should be taken with food: Take during or after meals. Swallow whole w/ ½ glass of water.
Drug interaction
Disulfiram-like effect w/ alcohol. Potentiated effect w/ coumarin- or indandione-derivative anticoagulants. Decreased hepatic metabolism w/ cimetidine. Confusion & psychotic reaction w/ disulfiram. Increased lithium conc. Decreased t½ & plasma conc w/ phenobarb. Increased plasma conc of phenytoin. Spuriously low values w/ aspartate aminotransferase assay.
