Metformin HCl
Indication
Type 2 DM in adults, particularly in overwt patients, when dietary management & exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control. Adjuvant to poorly controlled type 1 diabetic patients. Monotherapy or in combination w/ other oral antidiabetic agents or w/ insulin. In childn from 10 yr & adolescents, monotherapy or in combination w/ insulin. Reduced diabetic complications has been shown in overwt type 2 diabetic adults treated w/ metformin as 1st-line therapy after diet failure.
Instruction
Should be taken with food.
Drug interaction
Hypoglycemia may occur when used concomitantly w/ sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent (eg, glyburide) &/or insulin. Thiazide diuretics can exacerbate DM resulting in increased requirements of oral antidiabetic agents, temporary loss of diabetic control or secondary failure to the antidiabetic agent. Increase absorption & urinary excretion w/ nifedipine. Reduce the urinary excretion w/ cimetidine. Increase risk of hypoglycemia & lactic acidosis w/ combined use of alcohol.
