Generally, humans shed between 50 and 100 hairs per day. It is usually not noticeable as new hairs grow at the same time. Hair loss (alopecia) happens when new hair does not replace the fallen-out hair. The most common cause of hair loss is hereditary with ageing. Hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications, and excessive hair styling are other common causes of hair loss.
There are three cycles of hair growth: - the anagen phase (growing phase), the catagen phase (transition phase) and the telogen phase (resting phase). The Anagen phase last from 2-8 years, the Catagen phase last about 2-3 weeks, and the Telogen phase take about 2-4 months. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair falls out. Eyelashes, eyebrows, and arm and leg hairs have shorter anagen phases (about 1 month).
Hair loss can be divided into non-scarring and scarring. Non-scarring hair loss is more common, such as male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium. Diseases such as lichen planus and some types of lupus can cause permanent hair loss due to scarring.
Seeking early treatment would have a better chance of hair recovery. If treatment is delayed, the hair follicle will shrink and no new hair will be able to grow and less chance to be able to recover the lost hair follicles.
Medication
The common medication for hair loss treatment will be finasteride and minoxidil.
Finasteride is an oral medication that works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a hormone that can cause hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride can help to reverse hair loss and promote the growth of new hair.
Minoxidil, on the other hand, is a topical medication that is applied directly to the scalp. It works by widening blood vessels in the scalp, which can increase blood flow to hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. Minoxidil can also help to extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, which can lead to thicker, fuller hair.
Both finasteride and minoxidil have been shown to be effective in treating hair loss, although they work in different ways and may be more effective for different types of hair loss. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine which medication or combination of medications may be best for you based on your individual needs and concerns.
