Digital payments and mobile wallets are reshaping e-commerce transactions
Malaysia’a economy has been growing steadily over the last 40 years and now the country is on the path towards becoming cashless. A study by Visa found that 70% of Malaysian consumers prefer digital payments over cash.
The adoption rate is quite high, with 50% using online banking and 40% creating digital wallets. The total transaction value of digital payments is expected to reach US $42.2 billion by 2028.
The most preferred mode of payment is Mobile banking apps. Previously, Malaysia was highly reliant on cash. However, movement control order (MCO) restrictions and financial incentives for going cashless have encouraged more consumers to turn to digital wallets.
Buy now pay later (BNPL) services are also widely gaining popularity among Malaysian consumers. A KPMG survey ound that about 28% of respondents have used BNPL in the last year. The highest usage was found in the age group of 25 to 34.
