Understanding Dental Scaling: A Comprehensive Overview
Dental scaling is a crucial preventive and therapeutic dental procedure aimed at removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacterial toxins from the surfaces of teeth and below the gumline. It is an integral part of maintaining oral hygiene and preventing gum disease.
Our dentist uses specialized instruments to carefully remove plaque and tartar deposits that have accumulated on the teeth. These deposits are often difficult to remove with regular brushing and flossing alone. If left untreated, they can lead to gum inflammation, known as gingivitis, and eventually progress to more severe gum disease, such as periodontitis.
The procedure typically involves both supra-gingival scaling (above the gumline) and sub-gingival scaling (below the gumline). Supra-gingival scaling targets the visible plaque and tartar on the tooth surfaces, while sub-gingival scaling reaches the areas beneath the gumline to eliminate bacterial buildup.
