3 Companies Appointed for First Phase of Motor Vehicle Inspections

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced the appointment of three new companies to provide motor vehicle inspection services (PPKM) alongside Puspakom. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, this decision follows a cabinet meeting on March 17, 2023, where it was agreed that vehicle inspections under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) should be opened to more eligible companies.

The three approved companies are Wawasan Bintang, which will operate in Port Klang, Gua Musang (Kelantan), and Mersing (Johor); Pakatan Petroleum, which will operate in Rawang and Temerloh (Pahang); and Beriman Gold, which will operate in Kuching and Serian (Sarawak). These companies were selected after a strict evaluation process conducted by MoT and the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Applications for PPKM providers were open from July 1 to October 31 last year, and a total of 12 companies applied. The selected firms met key requirements, including being locally owned, financially stable, and having a minimum paid-up capital of RM10 million. They also had to demonstrate strong potential, readiness, and commitment to ensure that the conditional approval granted to them would be fully utilized. The chosen locations were assessed based on factors such as land use, distance from residential areas, and ownership status, following guidelines set by PLANMalaysia.

The approved companies now have 24 months to build their facilities, acquire the necessary inspection equipment, and obtain approvals from relevant authorities. MoT will oversee the process to ensure that all conditions and standards are met before issuing an operating licence.

For companies that were not selected, MoT will reopen applications for phase two from March 1 to June 30. This initiative aims to create healthy competition, improve inspection quality, and provide consumers with more choices. MoT and JPJ will also continue monitoring all approved companies to ensure they comply with safety regulations and have the necessary technical expertise to carry out inspections.
