In 2024, the Malaysian car market saw a major shift as the Proton S70 became the leading C-segment sedan. Despite facing tough competition from well-known Japanese brands, the S70 quickly secured the top spot within its first full year. According to Proton, 18,880 units of the S70 were sold, outselling its closest competitor by 8,470 units. Demand remains strong in 2025, with 1,143 units sold in January and 1,197 in February, maintaining steady momentum. One of the biggest reasons for the S70’s success is its affordable pricing. Even the top variant, the 1.5T Flagship X, remains priced underRM100,000. It offers the size of a C-segment sedan at a B-segment price, along with a powerful 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo engine delivering 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, it ensures a smooth and responsive driving experience.
A Proton survey of nearly 200 S70 buyers found that many customers had considered Japanese sedans before choosing the S70 due to its attractive features and value for money. The survey also revealed that 72% of owners are aged between 20 to 40 years old, with 51% married with children. Additionally, 39% purchased the S70 as a second car, 37% replaced their old vehicle, and 20% were first-time car buyers. To sustain its strong sales, Proton is running the Buka Lembaran Baharu promotion throughout March, offering exciting deals. Buyers can enjoy Duit Raya up to RM8,000, an extra RM1,000 trade-in value, and a FREE Aerokit worth RM3,130. Additionally, existing Proton owners can claim a RM1,000 loyalty reward, while civil servants receive an extra RM500 rebate. With new models expected from Proton and other brands, it remains to be seen whether the S70 can maintain its strong sales performance.
