Well, rumors surrounding a custom chip being made by MediaTek for the AI PC markets have been swirling for quite some time now, and the hype massively increased when it was reported on NVIDIA joining the development process. We did expect some showcase back at Computex 2024, given that NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang was a little "too much" attached to Taiwanese firms, with MediaTek being at the forefront. However, a new report claims that MediaTek's upcoming AI PC SoC is set to debut next year, coming head-to-head with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite lineup.Since MediaTek is an expert in developing "power-efficient" mobile chips, such as the Dimensity 9400, the Taiwanese firm won't find it difficult to squeeze out a chip for the AI PC segment, that not only provides optimal performance, but decent efficiency figures as well.
It is reported that the chip is currently in its design phase, with verification and sampling expected to be held by the next quarter, ultimately making the 2025 launch timeline imminent in this case. Interestingly, NVIDIA and MediaTek have kept quite silent around the AI PC chip, so it's likely going to be an unexpected launch, one which could turn the dynamics of the market, given how Intel and AMD are both slacking in their respective domains, MediaTek can capitalize on this opportunity, providing an unavoidable option.
The AI PC markets are expected to grow massively within the upcoming years, given that with the generative AI hype, every manufacturer is rushing towards integrating the technology's capabilities into its product lineup, so it's safe to say that there is optimism for NVIDIA-MediaTek's chip, but we will have to wait and see how the plot unfolds.
