Perodua and UTM Work Together to Develop Electric Vehicles and Train Young Talent

Perodua and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to drive Malaysia’s progress in electric vehicle (xEV) technology and nurture a new generation of engineering talent.

The MoU outlines various initiatives, including training and educating future engineers in xEV technologies. Perodua President and CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, expressed confidence in the collaboration’s potential.

“We are excited to envision a future where Malaysia develops its own xEV technology, with its advantages benefiting future generations,” he said.

Dato’ Sri Zainal also highlighted that this partnership signifies a new phase for Perodua. “Through this MoU, Perodua is moving beyond its initial mandate—from facilitating technology transfer to becoming a driver of technological innovation,” he added.

Since its founding in 1993, Perodua has been dedicated to producing affordable, high-quality vehicles and supporting Malaysia’s automotive technology transfer. Over the years, it has significantly contributed to the development of the local automotive ecosystem and technical expertise.

UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Rosli Md Illias, emphasized the collaboration’s potential to advance sustainable mobility in Malaysia. “This partnership highlights the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry, equipping graduates with the skills and knowledge to thrive,” he said.

The MoU focuses on six key areas, including enhancing UTM’s academic programs, establishing a satellite lab at UTM’s Skudai campus, sharing expertise in automotive advancements with a focus on xEV technology, and fostering joint research and talent development initiatives. It also creates opportunities for further collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

This collaboration aims to empower UTM students and researchers, set a standard for academic-industry partnerships, and ensure Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global automotive sector.
