Wisdom tooth removal. Is it necessary?

Wisdom tooth removal. Is it necessary?

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last ones to erupt into the oral cavity. 'Impacted wisdom tooth' happens when there is not enough space for them to erupt into proper position like other teeth do.

Type of wisdom tooth impaction

Problems very commonly associated with impacted wisdom tooth are:

- Inflammation of the gum surrounding the wisdom tooth.

The gum will appear swollen and painful with food frequently getting stuck around the area. Poor oral hygiene predispose to gum and facial infection; on some occasions they can also be be the cause of pain around your jaw joint.

- Tooth decay

Some wisdom teeth might not present with any symptoms yet but there may be a problem developing or there is high risk of a problem developing that you may be unaware of. These early 'hidden decays' are usually visible on the x-ray of your teeth.

If left untreated, the decay may also involve the tooth in front of the wisdom tooth. At later stages, the decay may get to the extent that the tooth in front has to be removed as well.

Regular dental checkup is very important as you might not even realize the extent of your problem. It's better to be safe than sorry. Any enquiry please do not hesitate to contact us.
