MOT to Announce New Vehicle Inspection Operators This Friday

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will announce several new companies this Friday that have been approved to open motor vehicle inspection centers, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
He explained that this decision follows the government’s move last year to end Puspakom’s monopoly as the only company providing vehicle inspection services.
"By allowing more companies to offer this service, we hope to create healthy competition, which will improve service quality and ensure vehicle inspections are done properly," Loke said during a Q&A session in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.

He was responding to Syahredzan Johan (Pakatan Harapan-Bangi), who asked whether giving one company control since 1994 had led to syndicates working together to approve unsafe vehicles.
Earlier, Loke said the government had completed the evaluation of applications, making sure the companies meet the required conditions, including financial strength and the ability to carry out inspections for the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

He also clarified that Puspakom no longer has a special concession but now operates under a license to conduct vehicle inspections.
"I'm not saying that syndicates or corruption are directly caused by the monopoly. However, in general, having only one company in an industry can sometimes lower service quality. That’s why we support competition," Loke said.
