Top 10 Car Brands and Models in Malaysia – March 2025
As of March 31, 2025, the latest data from JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan) shows that Perodua remains the top choice for Malaysian car buyers, both in terms of total car brand and individual model registrations. The brand’s strong reputation for producing affordable, fuel-efficient, and reliable cars continues to keep it far ahead of the competition. Leading the list of the most popular car models in Malaysia is the Perodua Bezza, with a total of 23,335 units registered. This compact sedan is a favorite among Malaysians thanks to its low maintenance cost and good fuel economy. Right behind it is the Perodua Axia, with 21,223 units, followed by the always-popular Perodua Myvi at 18,183 units. These three models alone make up a large portion of the cars on Malaysian roads and are especially popular with first-time buyers and families. In fourth place is the Proton Saga, a classic Malaysian model that continues to perform well, with 15,364 units registered. Perodua continues to dominate the list with two more models making the top 10 – the Perodua Alza at fifth place with 10,830 units, and the Perodua Ativa in sixth with 8,413 units. This means that 5 out of the 10 most registered cars in Malaysia so far this year come from Perodua alone. Moving to the seventh spot is the Honda City, with 7,503 registrations. At number eight is the Toyota Vios, with 6,029 units, a model that has long been seen as a reliable and practical choice. Honda appears again in ninth place with the HR-V (5,377 units), a stylish SUV that has gained popularity in recent years. Rounding out the list in tenth place is the Proton X50, a sporty SUV with 5,011 units registered. When looking at car brands overall, Perodua leads by a huge margin, with a total of 85,091 cars registered in just the first three months of 2025. This is more than double the number of vehicles registered under Proton, which is in second place with 34,227 units.Toyota is next with 26,175 units, showing steady growth and strong customer trust. Honda follows closely behind in fourth place with 20,472 units, continuing to be one of the most popular foreign car brands in the country. In fifth place is Chery, a Chinese brand that has been expanding quickly in Malaysia, recording 6,826 registrations. This is a sign that more Malaysians are starting to consider newer brands with modern designs and advanced features. The rest of the top 10 brands include Mitsubishi (3,725 units), Mercedes-Benz (2,221 units), Mazda (2,189 units), BYD – an EV-focused brand – with 2,159 units, and finally BMW in tenth place with 1,862 units. From this data, it’s clear that many Malaysian drivers continue to prioritise affordability, practicality, and strong after-sales service in their car choices. At the same time, the growing presence of foreign brands like Toyota, Honda, Chery, and BYD shows that more consumers are now exploring a wider range of options—whether it’s for advanced features, new designs, or greener technologies.
