In high current/high voltage scenarios found in large electrical installations such as substations, primary current injection testing is used. A high current (between 100A and 20,000A, depending on system specifications and test requirements) is injected directly into the primary side of an electrical system, such as a circuit breaker. The goal of the test is to determine how the system performs under various levels of current load.
Primary injection testing is appropriate for over-current trip relays connected to a circuit breaker. We can measure whether the breaker will trip or fail by injecting current into the system, as well as how long the current will be live before the circuit is broken.
