If you frequent stores that sell natural organic products like skin balm or skin salve, or dry-skincare products and such, chances are you’ve come across Tamanu oil. You might be unsure what it is exactly and what it can do. Sure, it's not as well-known as other oils you likely use daily. But this lesser-known yet powerful oil has been used for centuries by Polynesians for its effectiveness on various skin conditions like cuts, burns, eczema, stings, bites, acne, dry skin and even body and foot odour . Tamanu oil is also hugely beneficial to be mixed into skin and body care products, which is why you will find it in our DRY-EZ RELIEF SKIN SALVE and DRY-EZ RELIEF ROLL-ON REMEDY. So let's get to know more about Tamanu oil and its many benefits.

TAMANU OIL : PACIFIC GREEN GOLD
  • In the 50s, the first scientific studies on the healing, regenerative, antibacterial, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory properties of Tamanu oil.

TAMANU OIL HISTORY
  • Tamanu Oil is known by native Tahitians as a “sacred oil’ and “green gold”, used for centuries to heal wounds and promote skin regeneration. It was thought that god hid in its branches, and offered skin protection from the elements. All parts of the plant have been used medicinally.
  • Its unique ‘cicatrising’ property caused it to be researched by French researchers in 1918, where cases were recorded of amazing recoveries from severe infectious skin conditions from its topical application.

WHAT DOES TAMANU OIL DO?
  • Tamanu oil has a very complex chemistry which isn’t fully understood, but it is rich in fatty acids, including a unique fatty acid called – Calophyllic Acid, a natural antibiotic called Lactone, and a natural non-steroid anti-inflammatory called Calophyllolide which may be behind its remarkable ability to aid skin tissue regeneration. And what sets Tamanu oil apart from other oils is the lipid Calophyllolide, which is not found in any other oil. This lipid has anti-inflammatory properties to aid in calming and soothing skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and irritation. Tamanu oil can also help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by deeply conditioning the skin.

TAMANU OIL BENEFITS
  • Tamanu oil benefits skin in so many ways! It has been used for centuries to promote blemished-free skin that is healthy and clean, to help to reduce acne and fade scars. It has been used against psoriasis and eczema, as well as to reduce swelling from bites and burns. Scientific literature has found antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, hence its healing effect on all manner of skin complaints and problems. A true wonder oil.

Traditionally, applied topically, Tamanu oil benefits include its ability to:
  • Soothe and soften the skin
  • Promote the formation of new tissue and healthy skin
  • Help with inflammatory skin conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema
  • Treat acne
  • Help speed up the healing process
  • Heal and reduce scars
  • Moisturise dry skin

Tamanu oil has been used for centuries in its native lands for general skin and hair health. It has also been used medicinally for various ailments, including:
  • ulcers
  • wounds
  • burns
  • boils
  • blisters
  • cuts

HOW DOES TAMANU SMELL?
  • Tamanu oil is an all-natural skin ingredient and it has an earthy scent to match. Admittedly it isn't everyone's favourite, with the deep, nutty notes giving the oil a dark and strong woody smell. Even if it isn't something you personally enjoy, there's no denying how natural this ingredient is and it is said that after a short while you'll no longer notice it quite as much. High-quality tamanu oil has a strong, woody scent and is a deep green colour, that is the most important thing to remember if you are looking for a superior tamanu oil that could deliver skincare benefits.

TAMANU OIL’S BENEFITS EVIDENCED BY SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
  • The scientific name of the Tamanu plant is Calophyllum inophyllum which means "beautiful leaf," from the Greek 'kalos' meaning "beautiful" and 'phullon' meaning "leaf."
  • A study titled "Anti-inflammatory effects of Calophyllum inophyllum," done by Tsai SC, Liang YH et al, was published in Oncology Reports on September 28, 2012. In this study Tamanu oil was found to be a very effective anti-inflammatory oil, helping in skin conditions such as acne, rashes, and other irritations such as insect bites, sores, and eczema.
  • Another study was done in 2015 entitled, "The Wound Healing and Antibacterial Activity of Five Ethnomedical Calophyllum inophyllum Oils: An Alternative Therapeutic Strategy to Treat Infected Wounds," was published by Teddy Léguillier, et al. This study evaluated the wound healing and antibacterial properties of Tamanu Oil extracted from trees growing in five different locations. They concluded that when used topically tamanu was effective in treating infected wounds and skin diseases such as acne.
