Malaysia is actively seeking approval from China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) to export fresh whole Musang King durians to China. Nor Sam Alwi, Deputy Director-General of Malaysia’s Department of Agriculture, expressed hope to achieve this goal in time for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China next year.

Currently, China only allows the import of frozen whole durians, durian flesh, and durian puree. Thailand and Vietnam have already been granted permission to export fresh durians to China. On October 7, Nor Sam Alwi accompanied GACC representatives on a tour of the durian ecological farm of Kafu International in Malaysia, showcasing the farm’s management practices, including pest and disease control as well as post-harvest processing.

Nor Sam Alwi pointed out that China is the largest market for durian exports, and Malaysia aims to increase its market share by exporting fresh durians. Musang King is the most sought-after durian variety in China, and nearly 50% of Malaysia’s durian plantations grow this variety. She urged durian farmers to prepare to seize this export opportunity.

Dato’ Hwang Chong Lim, CEO of Kafu Group, stated that the group is ready to meet all the requirements and regulations for exporting fresh durians to China. Currently, they export approximately 1,000 tons of frozen durians to China each year, and this quota is expected to increase if the fresh durian export license is granted.
