For over three decades, Chan Fong has been a familiar and beloved name across Malaysia. At 54, the multi-talented 988FM broadcaster and Managing Director of 180 Degrees Brandcom Sdn Bhd continues to balance the art of storytelling, entrepreneurship, and a fulfilling personal life. Whether through his engaging radio shows, his entrepreneurial ventures, or his foray into acting, Chan Fong remains a master at connecting with people on multiple fronts. With his upcoming Chinese New Year movie OMG! Mom's Big News, Chan Fong proves once again that his versatility knows no bounds.
A Journey into Radio
Chan Fong’s foray into radio was a happy accident—a career path he never saw coming. “I always wanted to be in the entertainment industry,” he shares. “While studying advertising and graphic design, I heard a radio drama segment on Rediffusion (now 988FM) and discovered the voice actors were part-timers. I called to ask if they had openings, and while they didn’t at the time, they liked my voice and invited me as a trainee. That eventually led to my first stint as a voice actor.”

A year later, fate intervened again when Chan was approached to host his own radio show—a decision that marked the beginning of a storied career. Since then, the radio industry has undergone monumental changes, including the integration of digital channels, podcasts, and livestreaming platforms. “Back then, we couldn’t even say words like 'pig' or 'pork', let alone touch on sensitive topics like current affairs,” Chan recalls with a chuckle. “Now, it’s a whole new world with endless opportunities for engagement.”
His energy and creativity on air remain as infectious as ever. “Passion is key. You need to love what you do and think about how you can contribute to society. I always keep myself updated and curious about the world,” he says.
Some of his most memorable moments include covering critical topics like elections, 9/11, and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it’s the heartfelt moments on his night show that resonate deeply. “Listeners often call in to discuss personal issues—relationships, family matters, and more. It’s a privilege to be able to guide them towards the right choices and help them develop a better conscience.”
From Radio to Business
While Chan’s career as a broadcaster brought him recognition, his entrepreneurial journey reflects his ambition and vision. He co-founded 180 Degrees Brandcom Sdn Bhd, an advertising and branding agency that has grown to great success. “After graduating, I spent seven years without an opportunity in my field of study. Then a friend invited me to invest as a silent partner in an advertising business, and before I knew it, I was fully involved.”

His advice for aspiring business owners is simple yet profound: “Don’t be greedy. Earn what you deserve. There are no secrets to success.” For Chan Fong, the business is not just a financial venture but a reflection of his values. “We treat every project like it’s our own business, especially when working with SMEs. Our vision is to help them become number one.”
Balancing his dual responsibilities as a radio personality and entrepreneur is no small feat, but Chan has learned to set boundaries. “Radio is less stressful than running a business. I’ve learned not to bring work home and to stay present in the moment.”
OMG! Mom's Big News: Bringing Family to the Big Screen.
This January, Chan Fong steps into yet another role—as actor and producer for OMG! Mom's Big News, a Chinese New Year movie set to premiere on the first day of the festival. The film was inspired by an amusing personal moment when Chan thought his wife was unexpectedly pregnant in her late 40s. “I panicked about having to prepare for a baby all over again,” he laughs. “Luckily, it was a false alarm! But I thought it would make for a fun movie plot—and that’s how OMG! Mom's Big News was born.”
Starring alongside celebrated actress Anita Yuen, Chan admits feeling both nervous and thrilled. “She’s such a big star but also incredibly fun to work with. The character I play is similar to my real life—a father managing family dynamics—so it wasn’t too difficult to get into the role.”
The first few days on set were tense, as Chan shares, “Anita was feeling stressed since we were not familiar with each other. Additionally, this was my first time producing a movie, and the crew, including the director, were also new to the movie industry, despite having over 20 years of experience in TV drama and commercials. However, after that, Anita really enjoyed herself, and we all worked well together. She saw that all of us were putting our hearts into making the movie. Anita was especially happy when we brought in a lot of delicious food, including a Lok Lok food truck.”

The movie carries a meaningful message for audiences as they celebrate the new year. “It’s about family values, communication between parents and children, and appreciating life. These are universal themes that will resonate with everyone,” Chan says.
A Family Man at Heart
Despite his hectic schedule, Chan Fong remains deeply committed to his family. Years ago, he made the significant decision to stop emceeing on weekends to spend more time with his children. “They were pre-teens at the time, and I felt I needed to be there for them,” he shares. Today, family gatherings remain sacred, especially during festive seasons.
“I don’t involve my family in my work, and I rarely post about them on social media,” he adds, underlining the importance of keeping his private life grounded. As a parent, his focus is on instilling good morals and values in his children—principles he lives by every day.
Looking Ahead
As Chan Fong approaches the next chapter of his life, he envisions a gradual transition. “I hope to retire from the advertising firm in the coming years to focus on discovering life and sharing my experiences with my followers,” he reflects. Professionally, he dreams of producing award-winning advertisements and acting in more movies. On a personal level, he jokes, “I just want to become slimmer and look more active!”
For now, Chan finds joy in the simple things: watching TV, enjoying good food, playing Chinese chess, and jogging. “I unwind by just chilling and relaxing,” he says. His family enjoys trips to good restaurants, the occasional movie, and a yearly overseas getaway – “a simple but happy life,” he adds.
Whether on the airwaves, in boardrooms, or on the big screen, Chan Fong remains a shining example of balance, humility, and passion. As his story continues to unfold, audiences can look forward to seeing even more of this inspiring man in the years to come. OMG! Mom's Big News will be in cinemas on 29 January 2025.
