Big News: TNB Electricity Bills to Rise, but Solar Incentives to the Rescue!

TNB, in an announcement to Bursa Malaysia on 26 Dec 2024, said a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) is proposed to be implemented starting July 1, 2025

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had contacted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the minister of energy transition and water transformation, requesting that TNB provide clarification on this matter. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said any tariff increase should not impact the general population but instead target the ultra-wealthy or industries generating extraordinary profits

This adjustment has raised concerns among households and businesses alike, but there’s good news for those looking to combat rising costs while contributing to a greener future.

SEDA Expands Solar Incentives

The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) has announced exciting updates to its Net Energy Metering (NEM) programs:

  • NEM Rakyat Quota: An additional 150MW for residential users.
  • NEM Nova Quota: An extra 300MW for commercial and industrial users.

These expanded quotas mean more Malaysians can benefit from generating their own solar energy, reducing dependence on traditional electricity sources, and cutting down those monthly bills.

SolaRIS Cash Rebate Extended

In even better news, the SolaRIS Cash Rebate program, which helps offset the initial cost of solar installations, has been extended until April 2025. This extension gives homeowners and businesses a golden opportunity to make the switch to solar energy with added financial support.

Why Go Solar Now?

With electricity rates climbing and solar incentives at an all-time high, there’s never been a better time to go solar. By investing in solar panels, you can:

  • Save on monthly electricity bills.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint.
