Mahjong: The Classic Tile Game of Strategy and Luck
By Nadine Fernandez
Few games blend tradition, strategy, and a dash of luck quite like Mahjong. Originating in China over 300 years ago, this "mind sport" has become a beloved pastime across Asia and beyond. With its beautifully designed tiles and engaging
gameplay, Mahjong offers endless entertainment while challenging players to think on their feet.
THE BASICS OF MAHJONG
The game requires four players, a set of 144 tiles adorned with Chinese symbols, and a balance of sharp strategy and good fortune. The goal? To create a winning hand of four melds (or suits) and one pair, for a total of 14 tiles.

HOW TO PLAY MAHJONG IN 8 STEPS
Shuffle the Tiles: Place all tiles face down and mix them up.
Determine the Dealer: Roll the dice; the player with the highest roll becomes the dealer.
Build Walls: Each player selects 36 tiles and stacks them into two rows of 18, forming "walls" on the table.
Set the Playing Area: Push the walls forward, leaving the centre open for discarded tiles.
Distribute Tiles: Players draw 13 tiles each, starting with the dealer.
Start Playing: The first player draws a tile, then keeps or discards it to maintain 13 tiles. Play moves clockwise as players draw from the pool or pick up discarded tiles.
Form Melds: Combine tiles into a Pong (three identical tiles), Kong (four identical tiles), or Chow (three consecutive tiles of the same suit). Announce and display melds when using a discarded tile.
Declare Victory: The first player to complete four melds and a pair shouts “Sik wu!” or “Mahjong!” and wins

LUCK OR SKILL? WHY NOT BOTH?
Like gin rummy, Mahjong is a perfect blend of luck and strategy. Winning requires a sharp mind for meld-building and a healthy dose of fortune with the tiles you draw. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, Mahjong is the perfect way to engage your mind, connect with friends, and carry on a centuries-old tradition. Ready to play? Build those walls and let the tiles tell your fortune!
