BYD Beats Honda & Nissan In Global Sales For The 1st Time
According to media reports, Chinese EV maker, BYD, has for the first time registered higher sales than Honda and Nissan in Q2 2024. Reports also state that with BYD introducing a bunch of low-cost EVs in global markets, the carmaker is even closing up to Ford.
BYD's new vehicle sales is said to have climbed by 40% to 9,80,000 units between April and June 2024. This has allowed it to overtake both Nissan and Honda, making BYD the seventh-largest carmaker globally.
Apart from its growing sales in China, BYD is also expanding overseas. The EV maker reportedly sold 105,000 vehicles outside of China - triple the figures compared to last year. BYD is also said to be among the leading EV brands in markets like Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Thailand, Europe and a few other Southeast Asian countries. Also, Toyota is the only Japanese carmaker to have sold more vehicles than BYD in Q2 of this year.
BYD is currently working on expanding its manufacturing footprint in several countries. The carmaker opened its first overseas plant in Thailand last month, with other facilities in Hungary, Brazil, Turkey, Mexico and Pakistan in the works.
BYD is now said to be closing in on sales figures of other legacy automakers, including Ford. The American car giant, registered 1.14 million sales in Q2 2024.
