Since 2019, it has been possible to apply for a fully dark tint on all windows, but this is not available to everyone. Only individuals with certain health conditions or security concerns can apply.

To get this approval, you must submit an application to JPJ, pay a fee of RM5,000 for two years, and provide the necessary documents. For health-related reasons, a medical report from a hospital is required, while security-related applications require a police report or letter of support. This approval process, previously under the discretion of the Transport Minister, was transferred to the JPJ Director-General in 2019.

Consequences of Not Following JPJ Tinted Regulations

Although there was a misconception that violating tinting rules could lead to jail time, Transport Minister Anthony Loke clarified that this is not the case. The general penalty for many road violations includes the possibility of up to six months in jail or a fine of up to RM2,000, but no one has been jailed for tint-related offenses.

Car owners who do not follow the specifications are usually issued a compound notice. Jail time is reserved for cases where the compound is not settled, and further court action is taken.
