KEPALA BATAS – A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a foreign worker who fell from a height of 18 meters at a construction site on Monday. This incident follows another fatal fall on the same day, where a worker lost his life after falling from the eighth floor while exiting a gondola at a construction site in Bayan Lepas.
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang has dispatched a team of investigators to the site to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the victim, a general worker from a subcontractor company, was assigned to remove formwork on the roof structure of a ventilation shaft in a building known as a "dog house."
According to DOSH, the worker fell from the ventilation shaft while performing his task. He was discovered on the lower level alongside a piece of plywood that fell with him and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, DOSH issued an immediate stop-work order for all activities involving ventilation structures at the site until the investigation is completed. The employer has been directed to conduct an internal investigation to determine the root cause of the accident, recommend corrective actions, and submit their findings to DOSH.
DOSH has also confirmed that a follow-up investigation will be conducted, which includes obtaining relevant documents, recording witness statements, and inspecting the site once corrective measures are in place.
Under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure workplace safety and health. Employers must conduct thorough risk assessments and implement effective safety controls before any work begins. These measures are crucial in preventing workplace accidents and ensuring the safety of workers and the public.
